Dulan's On Crenshaw
💖 About Dulan's on Crenshaw: A Legacy of Soul
Welcome to Dulan’s on Crenshaw, where every meal is a celebration of family, community, and over 50 years of tradition in the food business!
Our story begins in 1975 when a young Greg Dulan started working alongside his parents after they purchased an Orange Julius franchise. This experience set the stage for a lifetime dedicated to hospitality. After launching the family’s first independent venture, Hamburger City, the Dulan family opened the beloved Aunt Kizzy's Back Porch Restaurant in Marina Del Rey in 1984. This is where Greg found his introduction to the world of soul food, quickly learning the ins and outs of the business. The food was so popular that Greg soon launched Aunt Kizzy's Catering Service, bringing delicious Southern flavors to special occasions all across Los Angeles.
In 1993, Greg realized a lifelong dream and secured the opportunity to take over a closed restaurant space right here on Crenshaw Boulevard. He and his wife, Brenda, poured their hearts into making it a success. Over the years, Dulan's on Crenshaw has become a true Los Angeles icon, serving everyone from neighbors to legends. Our tables have hosted a parade of history makers, including Mayor Tom Bradley, Rosa Parks, Magic Johnson, Queen Latifah, Richard Pryor, Biggie Smalls, and a host of other respected figures, athletes, and clergy.
🤝 Giving Back & Community Commitment
At Dulan's, our commitment to community goes deeper than just delicious food. We have a long and proud history of giving back, from serving 30,000 meals in Altadena after the fires to supporting the Concern Foundation's cancer fundraising efforts, and running the annual Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast for 20 straight years.
Greg Dulan is dedicated to ensuring Dulan’s is an employer of first opportunities and second chances, with a significant percentage of our workforce being formerly incarcerated individuals. This commitment to mentorship and community uplift is a lesson Greg credits to his education: "This is what Howard University taught me to do," he says.
We are proud of our tremendous appeal to the seniors of the community and are known for our generous portions—we hear all the time that our dishes often take two days to finish!
A Modern Icon for a Growing District
This dedication culminated in January 2024 with the self-financed, $2 million renovation of our original location. This effort created a first-class restaurant with two kitchens, giving the rapidly changing Crenshaw District the beautiful, sit-down dining experience it deserved. As Greg stated at the re-opening, he owes everything to his inspiration and role model, his father Adolf Dulan.
While Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen locations (founded by Adolf Dulan and now operated by Greg’s brother, Terry Dulan) continue the family legacy, Dulan's on Crenshaw proudly carries the torch, striving not only to serve delicious, from-scratch soul food but to serve the community that embraces us.
Stop by for some good food and a taste of true Southern hospitality!
